Super Bowl music sucks

4 02 2008

Let’s not dicuss what a surprising winner the Giants are. Hey, it was a nice game. The better team on that day had the upper hand. End of story. However, if Super Bowl XLII cemented one thing then it’s the realization that prime time TV is dead for new music (unless it’s casting tripe). It looks like today you can only sell catalog or “AI” crap by putting music on the mainstream stage. And does it get any more mainstream than a Super Bowl broadcast?

Prince last year was great, but then again: I’ve been a fan since I was a “tween”. Macca, the Stones … who is left? Led Zeppelin for Super Bowl XLIII?

Well, Tom Petty … I’ve never been a big fan. But that doesn’t really matter here. He delivered what was expected. Geezer rock. Not offending anybody. Just a singalong without exposed nipples.

And what’s with these neverending “Idol” tie-ins? We get the message, Fox. Dial it down a little.

Boy, is that lame. Is that what the audience wants to see/hear? Aren’t there some younger folks (under 30, maybe?) watching the game who can be confronted with some contemporary music? And please don’t tell me Jordin Sparks is either an artist or contemporary.

Not that I expect Fox to get creative and adventurous for a Halftime Show but shouldn’t they want to appeal to an edgier audience. And by edgier I don’t necessarily mean the Pitchfork crowd. There are tons of music left from Tom Petty.
