Royalties from CD sales are tanking

22 10 2008

This should surprise nobody. British collection society MCPS-PRS Alliance said that royalties from mechanical rights (CD sales, mostly) will decline almost 14 percent this year, while revenues from broadcast and online rights will increase by almost 12 percent, and income from performance rights will go up by 6.7 percent. In total numbers both, broadcasting/online and performance royalties, have already surpassed CD royalties in the UK.

The first nine months saw a 4 percent increase in total copyright revenues in Britain, but CD sales fell 9 percent. More details in stories at Financial Times and BBC News

DJ Z-Trips rocks the vote

22 10 2008

What is better than supporting the right presidential candidate? Supporting the right presidential candidate with the right music. Better yet, with free music. All you have to do is go to DJ Z-Trip’s website and download his Obama mix.

There are some 54 minutes of music along with some BO shout-outs that Z-Trip had put together for fundraisers and campaign parties. The file is a zipped MP3 (84.7MB). And did I mention it’s free?

I also like the cover. Very USSR. And very fitting, since right-wingers prefer to ignorantly label Obama as “socialist”.

Insolvent TMI – making the best of a bad job – is losing some big clients

22 10 2008

While TMI, one of Germany’s leading entertainment distributors and VMI specialists, is trying hard to stay afloat under receivership, more and more of the company’s clients are jumping ship. The retail chain Marktkauf has decided to switch and from now on will get media supplies for their more than 175 outlets via rackjobbing operation alpha. This means the entire Edeka retail group will be served by alpha now.

Other TMI customers, some 160 outlets total, are being taken over by wholesale operation Welt Records. Still trying to make things work with TMI, however, is online retailer buch.de, which for the time being has closed down its music shop.

According to trustee Christopher Seagon TMI is still in talks with clients, suppliers and creditors but he expects all parties to be open to concessions. Meanwhile, shipments from TMI continue to go out to retail clients, albeit only on a cash in advance basis.
